Accountancy sector to be reviewed
The Government is setting up a high-level committee chaired by accounting veteran Bobby Chin to review the accountancy sector. The review, a first for the local industry, is expected to take more than a year. It is not intended to be a knee-jerk response to the financial crisis, but more of a recognition of the sector's growing importance in supporting the financial services industry and the wider economy.

SingTel gets new director
[ SMU School of Accountancy Advisory Board Member] Fang Ai Lian has been appointed independent director and chairman of the audit committee of SingTel. She recently retired as chairman of Ernst & Young. She was appointed chairman of Metro Holdings last month and director of Banyan Tree Holdings in May.

Accountants not hankering for Big Four job
Public accounting firms are no longer the default employer of choice for accountants here, says the latest study on the profession. Where once it was the norm for accountants to be drawn to the likes of the Big Four, it would now appear that many would prefer to work as in-house accounting staff in companies instead.

Most accounting grads set sights on Big Four firms
Small is not beautiful for accounting graduates. Even medium-sized often fails to measure up. What a significant majority of these graduates want is to work for one of the Big Four accounting firms, the first major study of Singapore 's accounting profession has found.

Professional body CPA Australia has launched the CPA Australia Scholarship. This is the result of a new tripartite relationship between CPA Australia, Singapore universities and 11 leading Singapore employers. Prof Pang Yang Hoong, Dean of SMU's School of Accountancy , backs the programme.

The Audit Committee Guidance Committee (ACGC) commissioned SMU's School of Accountancy to conduct a survey on the practical difficulties and challenges faced by audit committees of Singapore-listed companies in doing their job. SMU's Associate Professor Leong Kwong Sin comments.

CPA Australia offers Web help to local firms in XBRL reporting
Professional accounting body CPA Australia has released a weblinar jointly developed, in collaboration with Acra, by two members: SMU's School of Accountancy Associate Dean Themin Suwardy and an NUS adjunct associate professor.
