Dean's Message

The nature and scope of accounting is constantly changing even as the world of business changes relentlessly. This is a challenging and exciting time where there is no safe career choice and there is no safety in an old and established programme of study, even in an old profession like accountancy.

What do the employers of the future desire and expect from the next generation of accounting graduates? Professional and technical competency? Yes! But that alone is not enough. The ability to deal with complex, interdisciplinary business activities and the ability to appreciate and manage inter-personal relationships across different cultures are two examples of the challenges facing our profession.

In other words, accountants of the future need to know much more than accounting; they can no longer be content to be mere providers of financial information, important as it may be.

The Accountancy Programme in SMU has been designed with the future in mind, and it has won the support of the profession and potential employers. The SMU accountancy programme has received professional accreditation from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS), Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), CPA Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). It also enjoys widespread support from major employers of accountants, such as the Big 4 accounting firms.

Why join a programme in a relatively young university? But why not? The rewarding and challenging career and company of your dream may not have been born yet!

We welcome you to explore what we have to offer and to join us in creating the accountants of the future.

Yours truly
