Frequently Asked Questions

What is the curriculum structure of the Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) programme?

The BAcc curriculum is designed to fulfill all the professional requirements for recognition by the accountancy profession without the need for further examinations, other than the pre-admission course required for all new members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). The BAcc curriculum at SMU is broad-based so as to provide the student with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large.

How long does it take to complete the BAcc programme?

The modular system of the SMU curriculum allows for maximum flexibility. Students may complete the BAcc degree with direct honours in as short as 3 years. Alternatively, students may choose to do a second major in finance, marketing, economics, law and information system management with an additional 2 to 6 courses and complete the degree in 3.5 years. And, for the first time in Singapore, students will be able to graduate in 4 to 4.5 years with a double degree in Accountancy and Business Management, Accountancy and Economics, Accountancy and Social Sciences, or Accountancy and Information Systems Management by doing an additional 5 to 12 courses.

How does the BAcc curriculum prepare students for the accountancy profession?

The BAcc programme aims to produce professional accountants who, besides being technically competent, possess the attributes and skills that are needed to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. Such attributes include analytical and creative abilities, a broad perspective to think across disciplines and geographical or political boundaries, and a confident mastery of today's technology.

Can I take the BAcc degree programme on a part-time basis?

The BAcc programme is only offered as a full-time course of study.
