sixty who attended the National Youth Forum, intends
to organise activities to promote inter-ethnic understanding
and a camp to bridge the divide between JC and polytechnic
students.

Universities gearing up for more fundraising as they gain more autonomy
As universities fund raise to build their endowments, students also
benefit as some of those funds are channeled toward financial aid. Featured
SMU students Chua Wan Rong [Accountancy student] and Shashank Nigam are two such beneficiaries of
SMU faculty-sponsored scholarships. Assoc Prof Low Aik Meng, Dean of Students,
and Robert Schlesinger, Director of Institutional Advancement, comment respectively

Picking
the ideal local university
Three junior college students spell out their
reasons for picking one of the three local universities
as their ideal choice. For Melissa Fam, 18, Singapore
Management University 's [SMU] advertising slogan portraying
its students as 'different' is not an empty claim. SMU
students have confidence and they are not afraid to
speak up, she says. Her heart is set on studying accountancy
there. The Anglo-Chinese JC science student has been
following the university's progress since her secondary
school days.

Looking
at Accountancy from a Different Angle
Third-year Accountancy student at SMU and star photographer,
Jeremy Nguee, spends his time in school juggling between income tax courses
and conducting photo shoots of his fellow classmates.
As the sole proprietor of Jeremynguee photography, Jeremy
has handled photo shoots for Zouk, Shiseido and other
well-known companies. Early this year, SMU, impressed
with Jeremy's work, commissioned him to shoot a series
of photos to highlight the students' passion for their
school. The photos were meant for the SMU shop located
on campus which retails various SMU paraphernalia.

USA
SMU's Miss Loi Chen Min, 21, cleaned hotel rooms in May
in an amusement park in Ohio, while her schoolmate, Miss
Chan Yining, 21, worked three months as a summer camp
counsellor in Minnesota.
An increasing number of Singaporean undergraduates are
taking work-and-travel holidays, doing unglamorous jobs
in exchange for the opportunity to travel and experience
a different culture.

29). As a graduating NTU Accountancy student from the first batch of the Project
Discovery programme, I cannot help but feel that NTU is slightly misrepresented
in the article.

NTU's revamped course stresses practical experience while
SMU's offering gives broad-based training. According
to PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Deborah Ong, the firm
had 20 SMU interns recently. "We intend to offer them full-time employment
upon graduation." Deloitte also found SMU interns "articulate
and confident."

23 of the 62 Singapore Management University students,
who graduated in December under the accelerated programme,
have found jobs. Apart, the university’s
first 16 students who graduated in August last year have
all secured employment.
