2007 Outstanding MPA Teacher Award

Our heartiest congratulations to Practice Associate Professor Pearl Tan for winning the inaugural "2007 Outstanding MPA Teacher Award".

This award recognises the instructor's efforts to facilitate learning and the winner is selected based on the nomination statements from the graduating batch and their teaching evaluations.

The graduating students shared some of their feedback on Pearl:

"A caring, patient and approachable lecturer for a tough subject"

"Pearl did very well to turn the seemingly toughest subject into an understandable and comprehensive module with as little pain on the student as possible"

"She controlled class participation very professionally and ensured that everyone was given a chance to participate and share their thoughts and ideas"

"She makes the learning environment non-intimidating so that we may handle the topics and issues head-on without undue fear or concerns"

Pearl teaches the course Advanced Financial Accounting in the MPA programme. Pearl speaks about her award:

"I am blessed to be in a job that brings people and knowledge together. Teaching is more than simply the communication of knowledge; it is also about relating with people and understanding their needs. Teaching accounting standards is interesting: they are dynamic, debatable and complex!

My teaching goal is to get my students to 'enjoy' the learning of accounting standards as much as possible (although the process is arduous!). My reward? When students tell me that they are able to put their hard-earned knowledge into good use.

I am also privileged to teach the pioneer batch in the MPA programme and to be honoured with the first Outstanding MPA Teacher Award. The resilience, positive spirit and commitment of our MPA 'pioneers' is most encouraging. Indeed the course that I teach, Advanced Financial Accounting is akin to a long-distance race and the pioneers ran the race like true marathoners! I am inspired by my students to continue my best to help future accountants scale the heights."
